New: Someone to talk to

Writer: MIRID PublicationsMIRID Publications

Starting March 2, 2025, a new service is available to members of Michigan RID. Members can book free sessions to meet privately with a certified interpreter.

Who it's for

Peer Support sessions are for interpreters and interpreter students to connect with colleagues. Peer Support sessions are not to provide interpretation services.

Why it matters

With the steady increase of remote interpreting services more interpreters than ever are working from home, reducing contact with colleagues.

Professional development events in the community are fewer compared to a decade ago, disrupting traditional networking. Younger interpreters may be connecting less with working professionals for support and advice.

Graduates of interpreter programs struggle to find professionals who can review their work and provide feedback, slowing their progress.

The bottom line

Interpreters are a valuable resource to each other: A source of perspective, connection, and advice. Peer support services will help to grow the connections that sustain ethical norms, standards of practice, and a healthy, professional field.

What it is

As a member of Michigan RID, you can now book times to meet remotely with a peer support volunteer. Times are subject to availability. You must have an unexpired membership subscription to Michigan RID.

You choose the topic for the meeting. Suggested topics include:

  • Ethical situations

  • Difficulty at work

  • Advice for career advancement

  • Feedback on interpreting work

  • Anything else related to interpreting!

An individual member can book up to six (6) peer support sessions each membership cycle.

How it works

Availability will be posted on our website on the Peer Support page. Select a time that works for you, and you're set. You will receive a Zoom link in your email.

We look forward to supporting our members with this new service and getting to know our members better.
